Aside from an all-around good feeling, there are some pretty amazing things that happen to, and in, the body when we have sex…
1. IT LESSENS PAIN
Our bodies naturally produce upwards of FIFTY chemicals.
These substances are produced by endocrine cells (mostly found in glands and organs).
When things get hot, your body releases one of these chemicals called endorphins – your body’s equivalent to morphine – and helps relieve or manage pain, even build your thresholds.
The good news, it includes masturbation.
So, when you feel a headache coming on, don’t reach for the aspirin. Grab your partner or nearest vibrator and head for the bedroom.
2. IT BURNS CALORIES
You can burn around 85 to 250 calories every time you visit the great “O” gym – depending on session length, of course.
And it increases heart rate, as well as works your back, abs, thighs, and buttocks (unless you’re a major starfish). Then there’s the added benefit of better flexibility … which allows you to check off more Kama Sutra positions from your sex checklist.
HOWEVER: the horizontal mambo is not the equivalent of a vertical jog.
It only counts as “light to moderate exercise”, but at least it does more for your body than sitting on the sofa.
3. IT DECREASES RISK OF HEART ATTACKS
When hormones like estrogen and testosterone get out of balance, that’s when the risk of heart disease develops.
Sex helps keep them in check.
And the more sex you have, the better.
One study revealed that men who did the dirty twice a week were 50% less likely to die of heart disease than men who resigned themselves to once a month. It can also help reduce the risk of strokes, osteoporosis, and hypertension.
4. IT DECREASES RISK OF PROSTATE CANCER
A study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association suggested that men who ejaculate 21 times a month or more (whether waxing ass, wanking off, or wetting dreams) were at less risk of prostate cancer.
This one, however, is still in the gray area since the findings aren’t entirely conclusive.
Although it certainly can’t hurt, right?
Men, consider making visits with Jill part of your health routine. It might just help with your visit to the doctor.
5. IT IMPROVES RELATIONSHIPS
You know that warm fuzzy feeling you get when you snuggle with your significant other?
Say thank you to the “Love hormone”, Oxytocin.
It’s secreted by the posterior lobe of the pituitary gland. It’s also responsible for social bonding, feeling good when you play with your dog, orgasmic euphoria, and building trust with a partner.
6. IT IMPROVES SLEEP
Gentlemen, are you nodding off after making nookie?
It’s not entirely your fault.
During the climax, the brain releases a large wave of chemicals, including oxytocin and his buddy endorphin.
Together, they join forces with norepinephrine, serotonin, vasopressin, nitric oxide (NO), and prolactin for a pretty potent post-orgasm sedative.
It also decreases the production of cortisol (a steroid hormone which induces stress).
It not only helps men, but women get some as well.
Many of the chemicals are mutually beneficial, but estrogen levels also increase, which can intensify a woman’s REM cycle for a deeper sleep.
Therefore…
If melatonin isn’t coaxing the Sandman, do a little dance, make a little love, and pass out tonight.
7. IT GIVES YOU BETTER SKIN
Getting the blood pumping and improving circulation can do amazing things for the epidermis:
- Eliminate toxins and clean pores by sweating
- Control skin inflammation and acne
- Transfer water for improved hydration
- Regenerate skin while in the sleep cycle
- Boost collagen production to ward off wrinkles
And, we all know that good sleep equals a good immune system and better stress levels. All of THAT contributes to a healthy, younger complexion too.
Forget the $300 skin cream. Gimme some sugar!
8. IT STRENGTHENS THE IMMUNE SYSTEM
Immunoglobulin A (IgA) is the front line soldier of your immune system.
This badass antigen fights off colds and the flu at entry points in the body.
However…
When these little guys are too weak to battle invaders, and the enemy breaks through defenses, that’s when your body goes on high alert and puts you into a DEFCON 1 stage of sickness.
Studies at Wilkes University in Pennsylvania found that people who have sex twice or more a week had more IgA.
But, don’t think a romp in the hay is enough to bulk up that immune system. Sleep, exercise, and good nutrition are essential as well.
9. IT IMPROVES BLADDER CONTROL
Ladies, while you’re lifting at the gym, worrying about how fabulous your abs look, you’re most likely ignoring this important group of muscles…
A woman’s pelvic floor is much akin to a hammock with three holes in it.
This essential spot holds up the uterus, bowel, and bladder — and maintains continence. It also helps carry the weight of a baby and aids in pushing the baby through the vagina during birth.
There are many reasons the pelvic floor can become weak, but regular orgasms go a long way towards toning up things.
If there’s no love buddy or good vibrations on hand, Kegel exercises are a good substitute.
10. IT REDUCES STRESS
Unless your partner is abysmal in bed, sex makes you happier.
Why?
All the things we listed above roll together into one big ball of awesome. You sleep better, are full of happy hormones, and are healthier.
These are potent pieces of ammunition against stress.
Toss in the exercise and good diet we mentioned before, and it’s happy health town.
BONUS – IT INCREASES DESIRE
Fizzling libido? Sex can help with that too!
It might seem chicken and egg, but having sex makes you want more sex.
There are ways to coax your waning drive from tricycle speeds to Indie 500. There’s masturbation, sex toys, sexting, face-to-face dirty talk, cuddling, erotic massage, and a whole lot more.
All you need is a spark (or a spank).
It also makes you live longer, boosts brainpower and makes fertilization easier.
That’s a lot of bang for your f … buck.
